📖 How Urban Heat Islands Form

Cities can be warmer than nearby rural areas, especially after sunny days. Dark roofs and pavement absorb solar energy, while fewer trees mean less shade and less cooling from evaporation. Buildings can also trap heat between streets. This pattern is called the urban heat island effect. Planting trees, using reflective surfaces, and adding green roofs are some strategies cities use to reduce it.

1. What is an urban heat island?

2. Name two causes mentioned in the passage.

3. Name one strategy cities can use.

4. How are the causes and solutions connected?

✏️ Writing

Write 1–2 paragraphs proposing one way to reduce heat in a neighborhood and support it with evidence from the passage.
